Reading Peter Brannen's excellent piece
Rambling through Time,
I was struck by how poorly people perceive how old the earth really is. The earth, from a human perspective is unimaginably ancient.
Dinosaurs have been gone for approximately 66 million years, a number so large that it's basically meaningless to a person.
In fact, it's only in the last several hundred years that the antiquity of our planet was worked out by scientists, a concept known as
deep time.
Inspired by Josh Worth's wonderful visualization
If the Moon Were Only 1 Pixel,
I thought it might be useful to try a pixel accurate view of the history of the Earth. Now, you can scroll
through the history of the Earth to get a flavor of just how old it is. In the visualization one pixel equals 500 years.
For reference one pixel roughly equals 0.26 millimeters or 0.016 inches, depending on your screen resolution.
Note: Best viewed using ↑ ↓ buttons or touch scrolling, depending on your device.
Scrolling with a mouse moves through time so quickly that it's very difficult to see events.
If you find yourself growing impatient you can use the drop-down menus to jump to specific events.
